New South Wales, 1788
When on 26 January 1788 the First Fleet landed at Sydney Cove, Port Jackson and the British Crown Colony of New South Wales was proclaimed, the British Union Flag was hoisted. This flag (or jack) had been proclaimed to be used at sea on 12 April 1606, after King James VI of Scotland became James I of England; it combined the English red St. George's Cross on a white background with the Scottish St. Andrew's Cross (a white saltire on a blue background).
