Tirana, Albania’s capital
The statue of Zog I, King of the Albanians (1895 – 1961). He was born Ahmet Muhtar Zogolli and took the surname Zogu in 1922. He was the leader of Albania from 1922 to 1939, first serving as Prime Minister (1922–1924), then as President (1925–1928), and finally as the first and only King (1928–1939). After the demise of the communist regime, he was rehabilitated. This three metres tall statue, placed at the beginning of Zog I Boulevard, faces in the direction of the city centre, a tribute to the creation of the modern capital, built during his reign. It commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the Independence of Albania (1912).
