Around Herat, western Afghanistan

Kuchi nomad camp

Tents of Kuchi nomads are perched near the tomb of empress Gawhar Shad and the four broken minarets, all that remains of a Timurid “madrassa”, an Islamic religious school near Herat, destroyed during the 19th century to ensure a clear line of sight for their marksmen against an expected Russian attack, which never materialised.
